What Is a Stephen Minister?
Pastors are like firemen or first responders. They are first on the scene during a crisis. But just like first responders, before the heart ache, sadness, and loneliness are over, there is another crisis that the Pastors need to tend to. And no matter how much they want to see the last crisis through, there are just not enough hours in the day.
Stephen Ministry is an extension of pastoral care provided by lay people who are specially trained and equipped to provide ongoing care. Long after the casserole dishes are washed and returned, the last flower petal drops, and the out of town family returns to their homes, Stephen Ministers show up. Stephen Ministers will listen, pray, care, and love … for as long as it takes.
Stephen Ministry is a well-structured program that has been in use by congregations for 35 years. New Love in Christ Church has a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to help you, members of your family, and members of our community. This is a completely confidential ministry.
God may be calling you for this ministry. It requires high commitment. But isn’t that just what God gave to each of us? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” John 3:16
Maybe you’re thinking you don’t have what it takes to help someone through a period of grief or despair. Stephen Ministers are caregivers; God is the cure giver.
